Middle School Football

Dear Parents/Guardians of Student Athletes,


The Holmen Middle School Football Coaching Staff would like to welcome you to the 2020 season of 7th and 8th grade tackle football.  This season may look and feel very different, but we are looking forward to creating a fun and safe learning experience for our student-athletes. This year our head coaches are Josh Kinsman – 8th grade and Dan Lerberg – 7th grade.  They will be your contacts in case of any questions or concerns. Please don’t hesitate to communicate when necessary!  Their contact information is located at the end of this letter.


As we prepare for the upcoming season, please realize there are still a lot of unknowns. We will do our best to communicate any new information as it arrives to us.  Here is the information that we know at this time:

1. The first day of practice is Tuesday, September 8th. We will follow the safety guidelines for practice that are outlined by the Coulee Covid-19 Collaborative and the Holmen School District. Please know that our practice routines must change depending on our current “Risk” level determined by the county and the school district. We have a different set of guidelines outlined in our Football Individual Program Plan depending on our current risk level. This includes topics such as mask wearing, and the ability to participate in competitions against other schools.  We will need to be extremely flexible in this environment.  Here is a link to the school board presentation regarding Fall Co-Curricular Activities. 

2. Practice times will be 3:30 p.m. – 5:25 p.m. on all school days, unless otherwise announced.  The district will provide transportation to practice for those that need it. Athletes should be picked up in the south parking lot (Door A) unless specified by the coaching staff.  Please be prompt.

3. Players will not be allowed in the locker rooms for practice.  This means they will need to transport all equipment to, and from practice each day.  Players must also bring a full water bottle each day. They will not be allowed to share water at all.

4. Players and coaches are REQUIRED to wear a face mask for practice (at our current risk level).  There are times when face coverings may be removed (depending on our risk level) but players need to have a mask on, unless directed otherwise.


Make Sure You Are Registered!

  1. ALL players will need to have required “paperwork” on file with the school district.  Information for completing this process can be found on the Holmen School District Webpage, by clicking on the Activities/Athletics tab, and then the Activities Registration link https://holmenhs-ar.rschooltoday.com/.  You will find a detailed explanation of requirements needed to be completed for all student athletes.  It is important to understand, if your player does not have all necessary documents completed, they will NOT be allowed to practice/participate
  2. We will not be issuing any equipment until the second week of practice, at the earliest (week of 9/14). We will let you know the process for this soon.  Once equipment is handed out, all WIAA players are expected to complete an acclimatization process to “ease” players into the intensity of practice.  All players must complete the 5-day acclimatization process to be cleared to suit up in full pads.  Coaches ensure that all players complete this process.  More information can be found on the WIAA website under “Fall Football Acclimatization.”


1. 8th grade will have one team this year. Seventh-grade will likely have 2 teams (dependent on number of players signed up and available). To maintain competitive groups, players will be split into 2 evenly talented teams. 

2. The following is a list of equipment provided to your player and equipment that your player will be responsible for ( Remember, for the first week of practice we will not be wearing helmets or any other pads):

  • Helmet
  • Athletic Shorts
  • Mouth Guard (Standard one-size fits all)
  • T-Shirt
  • Shoulder Pads
  • Socks
  • Football Pants (w/ needed pads) – If 5-Pad Girdle not purchased
  • Cleats (Recommended for outdoor practice)
  • Practice Mesh – If player does not have one from or did not participate in youth football.
  • 5-Pad Girdle (Optional)
  • Game Jersey
  • Practice Mesh – If player has one from youth football
  • Water Bottle

*Parent/player/fan Holmen football apparel will be available for purchase this year.  A link will be available to you at holmenfootball.com by going to the Middle School Football link. Look for more information on this in the near future (we will let you know when the apparel sale is open).
